Countryside Touring (2 Days)

Recommended Season: Sping, Summer, Fall

Day 1


  • Tour Tioga Gardens’ watergardens and domed conservatory filled with exotic plants and flowers.   (www.tiogagardens.com; 607/687-5522)

  • Shop Historic Owego Marketplace’s unique shops and boutiques  (www.owego.org).

  • Take a walking tour of the 19th century architecture in the downtown Owego historic district, and don’t miss a guided tour at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum.  Highlights include a 1913 Monarch motorcycle made in Owego, early 19th century spinning wheels, images from Matthew Brady’s studios, an extensive genealogy collection, folk art portraits and more  (www.tiogahistory.org; 607/687-2460).

Afternoon

  • Walk over to the 1910 Jail House Restaurant and enjoy an afternoon eating with your friends in your own cell block; 607/223-4210
  • Head out to Iron Kettle Farm, 1999 Winner of the New York State Governor’s Agri-tourism Award.  Explore their petting zoo, browse through Grandma’s Barn gift shop and walk through their gardens (www.ironkettlefarm.com; 607/659-7707).

  • Check in to the Owego Treadway Inn, (www.owegotreadway.com; 607-687-4500) along the Susquehanna River for a riverside room, or for a smaller group, the 1856 Glenmary Inn, (glenmaryinn.com; 607-687-8819) a beautiful Italianate Inn high atop a hill in the country.

Evening

  • Head over to Tioga Downs to try your hand at video gaming or enjoy the energy of live harness racing, and grab a bite to eat at any of the food outlets-The County Fair Buffet, The Carousel Bar, and Coasters Sports Bar (www.tiogadowns.com 888-win-tioga).

  • Back to the Owego Treadway Inn for a good night’s rest, or stop in their lounge for a nightcap.


Day 2


  • After a delicious Riverside breakfast, visit Waterman Conservation & Education Center, Apalachin (www.watermancenter.org  607/625-2221). Presentation/tour on various topics such as birding (raptors), Native American history, or uses of native plants in everyday life and as medicines.

  • Tour Hiawatha Island in Apalachin (www.watermancenter.org, 607/625-2221).  Take the “Susquehanna Shuttle” boat ride to the largest island in the Susquehanna River and hike the trails learning of its past as a vacation hot spot.

  • Enjoy lunch in Owego on the porch at the Cellar Restaurant (www.thecellarrestaurant.net).

  • Head out to the Bement-Billings Farmstead, Newark Valley (www.nvhistory.org), 607/642-9516. Tour a living history museum where guides in period costumes demonstrate open hearth cooking, blacksmithing, and candlemaking. See what life was like in the early 1800’s.
